I think the REALLY weird part is not what happened at the customs booth (after all, they had no legal reason for detaining him). But he ditched his car and hitched a ride to the border. That means a Canadian actually stopped and PICKED UP a guy with a sword and bloody chainsaw.
There's a point beyond polite, and I think they crossed the line.

Maybe Customs could spring for a couple of bucks and buy some bottles of that stuff that identifies human blood.
